Why your hair is falling out — and what no one is telling you
By Dana · Soul Gypsy Salon · Holistic Hair & Scalp Care
"I stood in my shower holding clumps of hair and thought — I'm a hairdresser. I know hair. Why is this happening to me?"
That was me, after Covid. I lost my taste, my smell — and then my hair started going too. But what shocked me most wasn't the hair loss. It was what I discovered when I started digging into why.
The products I had trusted for years — products I was using on myself and my clients — were making my scalp bleed. Literally. The chemicals were that harsh. And no one in the industry was talking about it.
The gap nobody wants to admit exists
I spent months searching for products and information specifically for women going through hormonal changes — menopause, illness, medication side effects. What I found was almost nothing. A few shampoos with pretty labels. No real solutions. No one connecting the dots between what's happening inside your body and what's happening on your scalp.
So I went looking for answers myself. I trained with a master in Japan, studying scalp health and head spa techniques. I started formulating my own products. I rebuilt my entire practice around one question: what does a scalp actually need to heal?
Then my sister got breast cancer
Everything I had learned became deeply personal. Her body changed. Her scalp changed. Her skin changed. I started helping her — and through her, I found my way to other women going through cancer treatment, navigating medications, facing hair loss they didn't ask for and didn't expect.
These women weren't just losing hair. They were losing a piece of how they saw themselves. And the beauty industry was handing them drugstore shampoo and calling it a solution.
What I know now — after 33 years
Hair loss during menopause, illness, or medication changes is not just cosmetic. It's your body communicating. And your scalp deserves the same care and attention as the rest of you. Here's what actually makes a difference:
- Removing toxic, hormone-disrupting ingredients from your hair care routine
- Nourishing the scalp — not just the strands
- Understanding how your hormones, medications, and health changes affect your hair growth cycle
- Using organic, non-toxic products that support healing instead of creating more damage
This is exactly what I do — in my Gilroy salon and now virtually, for women everywhere who are ready for real answers.
Ready to find out what your scalp is telling you?
I offer virtual consultations for women dealing with hair loss, scalp issues, menopause changes, and medication side effects — wherever you are.
